Food on Japan Airlines

I fully intended to eat breakfast in the airport lounge so I could sleep through the flight to Narita. The lounge only had a few people in it compared to being quite full last time. I guess the lady holding the priority pass sign directing people down made a huge difference. The food was also not as good. The fried rice was okay but the sausages looked like hot dogs and I got a couple small eggs but the yolks were cooked through. I spotted someone with dim sum containers and he directed me to a tiny setup in the corner were they had sweet buns, egg yolk, green ones, and taro. The egg yolk was excellent, taro a little pasty, but I think that's taro.

So when the Japan Airlines stewardess woke me to ask if I wanted to eat I was planning to say no. Before I was conscious enough to form a polite response she showed me pictures of two entrees which both looked good especially the shrimp pad Thai so I asked for that. She then asked "would you like some delicious miso soup?". Well if it's delicious it seems rude to say no so I got some of that too. When she set down the tray it was a beautiful spread and I remembered that Japanese have the best food, so I should eat it all. The miso soup was indeed delicious! The salad which usually is terrible and a source of stomach aches for me on fights was also very good. The pad Thai was so good I practically inhaled it. I read the red package which said "kameda seika... Providing people with tastiness, happiness, and peacefulness". I'll save those for later.

The noodles were plain and boring, but then I thought I should spice them up with the little bottle of soy-sesame (that's my guess). That did the trick. I devoured that as well. And the tiny potato salad. The fruit was the only thing that was just okay. They brought around small haagen dazs vanilla ice cream for dessert. Who ever said airline food was no good has not flown with JAL. I can see why my friend from Japan had to move back to Japan because of the food (she moved to California because of the smoking, but apparently it's easier to avoid people smoking in Japan than it is to find good fresh groceries in California).

On the next leg to SFO the dinner was good, but not as good as the previous meal; however the miso soup was again delicious! The big surprise was after I woke up and they brought breakfast. It looked odd. A box and two small white dishes. Then they passed out directions...the directions were for the food! Once you open up the box, there is another small dish with gravy and veggies that you mix with the carb items in the box and garnish with the items in one of the dishes. Once you put it all together it's quite good! But I've never had a meal that complicated.
